Goal

The goal is to provide a standardized scientific calculator similar to the ones used on the Algebra 1 FSA during class time to students in my Algebra 1 class. 

What will be done with my students

Students will use the scientific calculators to calculate complex arithmetic when working on algebraic concepts such as exponential equations and functions, radicals, and rational numbers. Students will also learn the technical skills required to competently operate scientific calculators, which can be transferred to more complex models of scientific and graphing calculators in later math classes. 

Benefits to my students

Many of the my students are not financially able to purchase a scientific calculator of their own. Most students rely on the few simple calculators on hand in class or on their cell phones. Having a classroom set of scientific calculators would provide all students with equal access to the technical equipment necessary to be successful in Algebra 1. It would also reduce the temptation of students using the calculators on their phones to text, take photos, or get on social media during class time. Also, because I intend to purchase the same style of calculators that students are allowed to use on the Algebra 1 FSA, students will have the opportunity to become familiar with the calculators before they encounter them at the time of the FSA. 

Budget Narrative

The funds needed will be used to purchase a classroom set of 30 scientific calculators for classroom use.
