Goal

Students at Hilliard Elementary will experience playing a stringed instrument.

What will be done with my students

The students will have the exciting opportunity to play a stringed instrument called a dulcimer, also known as a lap or Appalachian dulcimer. These instruments would be permanently added to the collection at HES. Currently second, third, fourth and fifth graders love to play the dulcimer in our music class, however there are not enough instruments for each student to have his or her own (we currently own 13 dulcimers). The added dulcimers would make it possible for students in most classes to have their own instrument. The tuners would give the students opportunity to check and tune the instruments. The tuners would be shared. The carrying bags would be used to protect the instruments when not in use and would give the students opportunity to demonstrate good citizenship in taking care of school property. The dulcimers, carrying bags and tuners would be used within the nine weeks after they arrive in the music room.

Benefits to my students

It is expected that all second, third, fourth and fifth graders will have opportunity to enjoy playing these instruments. It is important that music class be not merely theory or watching others play, but be an individual hands-on experience. Using a tuner would not only be a music experience, but also a science lesson in learning about sound and pitch in the tightness and looseness of string. The carrying bags would be used to protect the instruments to make sure they can be used for many years. As well as using the dulcimers in classroom playing they would be used for after school activities and school programs.
