Goal

As the teacher for the only high school newspaper in Nassau County (The Stinger), my goal is two-fold: to allow all of my journalism students (9-12th grade) to learn journalistic photography skills not just from their textbook, but as a hands-on learner with a 35mm camera and lenses which will allow them to photograph events (sports, staged productions, etc.) that are at a distance under varied lighting conditions, producing high-quality photographs that will be published in The Stinger, and, secondly, to broaden their marketable abilities for employment after high school in occupations that require skilled photographers. 

What will be done with my students

ALL journalism students will be trained to use the camera in class, learning to manipulate the settings, choosing appropriate lenses, and understanding how the camera's components interrelate. They have been using simple point-and-shoot cameras and have not had the advanced equipment necessary to broaden their knowledge and abilities. The camera will be used all year, both for events that happen during the school day and after the school day ends. From the day the camera arrives, it will be used for class assignments and will allow me to create additional instructional materials about digital photography in today's world. 

Benefits to my students

The purchase of this camera and attachments will allow the students in my journalism class - this year there were over 60 - to have the ability to take pictures during the school day and at after school events regardless of lighting conditions and distance. There are many occasions throughout the year where other teachers ask for a Stinger staffer to take pictures of a guest speaker, award presentations, etc. For example, just this month two journalism students were asked to take pictures of visiting Florida State Attorney General Angela Corey who was speaking to a class. All that was available for them were the point and shoot cameras which limited the type of photographs that could be made. In this age of heightened digital imaging ability, an essential element for a high school photography student is equipment that will allow the student to take high quality photographs. (This grant request is for one camera in order to keep the cost under $1,000, but the benefit would be even greater if the grant could include funding for two cameras. As a teacher, I'm accustomed to dreaming.)
