Goal

Students in the 3-D art class will be able to learn thrown pottery techniques on a throwing wheel and will learn about glaze chemistry and firing techniques.

What will be done with my students

Students will learn basic centering, throwing and finishing techniques on the potters wheel. Ceramics offers the opportunity to learn about chemistry, physics, and math. The school currently has all the hand tools necessary as well as a large ventilated kiln but there are no pottery wheels. Students must have passed 2-D art to enroll in 3-D art and will be doing several projects per semester in clay.

Benefits to my students

Students would be able to experiment with various types of throwing such as wares (cups, vases, bowls) and other vessels (lidded jars are excellent math projects incorporating shrink percentages and precise measurements) as well as free form techniques which start with a thrown shape and go on to be masks, expressive abstract pieces and mixed media opportunities. As their teacher, I am trained in raku, traditional pottery and salt firing techniques.
In learning about wheel throwing, students develop fine motor skills, patience, and will learn about physics and chemistry. Each clay body has different properties and students will learn what makes clay elastic or sturdy based on hands on experience on the pottery wheels. Glazing wheel thrown wares is an exciting way to talk about chemistry as the glazes are much easier to see and manipulate than on small hand built projects.

Budget Narrative

Speedball Artista tabletop pottery wheels are 358.00 regularly, however we usually receive a discount. The 3-D art class funds purchase of materials and supplies on the same shipment as the wheels would be ordered so shipping is typically discounted as well, however on a large item it may not be. I feel confident that with the $1000.00 we will be able to make up any small balance from our art budget to be able to purchase 3 wheels.
