Nassau Education Foundation

It’s hard enough to squeeze out the time in the overcrowded middle and high school English curriculum to read young adult and classic novels, but with picture books, you can read the entire work aloud, model the focus you want students to concentrate on, let them explore the craft, have the discussion, and even try it out in their own writing–all in one period! Secondary teachers can use picture books in so many ways: as writing prompts, as mentor texts for craft and genre study, as “ways in” to thematic units, as complete texts for close literary analysis or application of different critical lenses.

Goal

It’s hard enough to squeeze out the time in the overcrowded middle and high school English curriculum to read young adult and classic novels, but with picture books, you can read the entire work aloud, model the focus you want students to concentrate on, let them explore the craft, have the discussion, and even try it out in their own writing–all in one period! What will be done with my students

Using a myriad of picture and children's books throughout the year, students will improve their writing or use them as the impetus for new writing. These books will serve as non-threatening exemplar texts for literary elements and the six traits of great writing. Students will write poems, short stories, essays and memoirs, drawing on what these children’s books have to offer in terms of rich word choice, concise language and imagery.

Benefits to my students

Students will become not only proficient writing, but prolific writers. Students will hone their craft so that original pieces will come to life with detail and relevance.

Budget Narrative

All of these books are priced through Amazon.com.
