Nassau Education Foundation

If you entered my debate classroom, you would frequently hear my students state "Evidence is the essence of debate" and "Think the other side" because my goal is for them to think critically, objectively and utilizing researched evidence supporting their positions. To further this goal, I am requesting additional resource material and opportunities for the students to observe and/or participate in debate activities.

Goal

If you entered my debate classroom, you would frequently hear my students state "Evidence is the essence of debate" and "Think the other side" because my goal is for them to think critically, objectively and utilizing researched evidence supporting their positions. To further this goal, I am requesting additional resource material and opportunities for the students to observe and/or participate in debate activities.

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to increase their understanding of current events as they relate to debate topics by having access to a classroom set of current events magazines. Student will be able to further understand debate elements such as cross-examination, case construction, rebuttals, etc. by viewing instructional DVD's and then watching actual demonstrations of these elements on the DVD's. Furthermore, students will have an opportunity to either attend a college debate or participate in a novice debate activity.
The timetable for this grant would be over the course of 18 weeks per class.

Benefits to my students

As the only debate classes in Nassau County, our program is growing and this year we have two beginning debate classes with the hope of adding an advanced debate class next year. With the growth of the program, we need additional resources, both to enhance the classroom experience and to continue the momentum in building this program. Approximately 25-40 students and 1 teacher would benefit from this grant, and the ultimate goal is to build a stronger and larger debate class base impacting students with college preparatory and career skills.
