Continuing to include tangible, relevant activities to accompany classroom practices is a challenge for all teachers. One way I do this in my Biology class is to have students assist with monitoring and maintaining our class saltwater reef tank. Checking parameters of certain chemicals in reef water ensures a pristine environment for our corals and other reef inhabitants. I utilize our reef tank in numerous units including comparison of vertebrates/invertebrates, marine ecology, and discussions related to photosynthetic organisms.

Goal

Continuing to include tangible, relevant activities to accompany classroom practices is a challenge for all teachers. One way I do this in my Biology class is to have students assist with monitoring and maintaining our class saltwater reef tank. Checking parameters of certain chemicals in reef water ensures a pristine environment for our corals and other reef inhabitants. I utilize our reef tank in numerous units including comparison of vertebrates/invertebrates, marine ecology, and discussions related to photosynthetic organisms.

What will be done with my students

Students will be largely responsible for testing and monitoring essential components of our reef. These include calcium, phosphates, nitrates, alkalinity, temperature, pH, among others. We will also be attempting to breed and raise clownfish from our breeding pair. These test kits are critical to maintain conditions for the breeding process.

Benefits to my students

By having students take ownership in these tasks, it helps them to understand the fragile nature of our worlds delicate ecosystems. It also provides them basic understanding of marine biology and the organisms that call coral reefs home.

Budget Narrative

These are 5 of the most important tests to maintain water quality in a reef tank.
