Goal
The goal of this grant is to promote reading through science by having students investigate key science content and vocabulary terms through on-level science books. The books address science concepts and vocabulary as well as historical biographies, careers in science through high-interest articles.
What will be done with my students
These science leveled readers would be implemented throughout the entire school year through unit topics like Earth processes, electrical connections, astronomy, Newton's toy box, matter and change, plants in our world, Earth, Moon & Sun and DNA. These leveled readers complement the accelerated reader program in the Language Arts curriculum as well as they address the science concepts of Florida's Next Generation Sunshine State Science Standards through reading comprehension and writing activities. Each book would be used weekly in order to address writing and reading in the science field.
Benefits to my students
The outcome of the science leveled readers would be a stronger understanding of science concepts through end of course exams and a better understanding of how science works in the career field. Additionally, these science books incorporate common core skills that are integrated into the science period: reading, writing and logical communication.
Budget Narrative
This budget includes five copies of the eight books with each skillbuilder that goes with it. The skillbuider includes the comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and writing activities.
