I would also like to have some modern day current themes, such as vampires, military forces, and The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries. Students will appreciate the different format they will get in these Graphic Novels compared to the typical style of literature they will always have to read in school and hopefully read more books.

Goal

I am requesting graphic novels for the Media Center for all grades that include titles of the Classics and popular and current themes in fiction and non-fiction in the amount of $ 500.00 I would like to order Classic titles in Graphic Novel format such as Treasure Island, Gulliver’s Travels, and Frankenstein to name a few. I would also like to have some modern day current themes, such as vampires, military forces, and The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries. Students will appreciate the different format they will get in these Graphic Novels compared to the typical style of literature they will always have to read in school and hopefully read more books.

What will be done with my students

Graphic Novels are a newer format of writing in books that students of all ages enjoy, especially reluctant readers. Graphic novels are written in a comic book style format, with colorful pictures to convey meanings. Many avid readers as well as reluctant readers really enjoy this style of books. As the Media Specialist, it is important for me to incorporate these materials into my library for our students. Graphic novels can also help improve language and literacy development, including second language learners; the illustrations provide valuable contextual clues to the meaning of the written narrative. The popularity among our students with limited English proficiency is greatly seen with these books. Providing students with diverse reading materials promotes their transition into lifelong readers. My goal for the library is to provide a rich supply of reading material to children of all ages, as well as a place and time to read, and that is the first step to bridging the gap between poor and good readers. There are so few of these books currently in our library, and I have many requests for them.

Benefits to my students

These Graphic Novels will motivate our students to keep reading when they feel burned out or if they are struggling and are a lower level reader from their peers and classmates as well as helping our English Language Learners enjoy and understand a new language. I know this style of book is here to stay in our society, and I would like to be able to purchase titles that my students will enjoy and share with others.
