Goal

My goal is to provide my 6th, 7th, and 8th graded gifted, advanced math, and Algebra Honors students with exciting, dynamic lessons that motivate by using hands-on exploration to challenge creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

What will be done with my students

Students will be working with two different STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Education projects. These projects consist of K'NEX Real Bridge Building and K'NEX Education Computer Control Sets. With the Computer Control Set, students will use mathematics and science processing skills, engineering design processes, technology, invention and innovation to create their own models that are computer controlled. While creating their own model of bridges, they will be studying the history, function, structural design, geometry and strength of bridges. They will investigate concepts related to the physical properties of materials and their application in placement, design and construction. Students will participate in inquiry-based lessons that are aligned to science, technology, and math standards.

Benefits to my students

Gifted students often get bored and need enrichment and challenging, rigorous activities that motivate and inspire learning. These K'NEX STEM projects challenge students as they build, investigate, problem solve, discuss, and evaluate scientific and design principles. Students will benefit from the enrichment of participating in hands-on projects that integrate technology, math, engineering and science, while making learning fun. The fun, yet challenging projects will motivate and inspire students to take the risks needed to help them reach their full potential. These projects encourage team-work and promote self-confidence through achievement. Another benefit of having these projects is that the sets are reusable and will be of great educational value for my students in the years to come.

Budget Narrative

The money from this grant will be used to purchase K'NEX STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) based sets: K'NEX Computer Control Set and K'NEX The Real Bridge Set. These sets will be used each year to motivate, stimulate and give students the love of learning!
