Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 12

The purchase of two iPad minis and touch-to-talk software has been critical in facilitating the communication needs of a number of my nonverbal and low verbal students. The iPad serves as their "voice" to request items, answer questions, and communicate with their peers. It has been instrumental in providing a critical bridge to verbal communication for one student who was completely nonverbal, but began using spoken words for the very first time!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To maximize communication and active participation in classroom activities in spite of the physical or verbal limitations of my students due to their disabilities or developmental delays.

What will be done with my students

Students will have access to an iPad which has been preprogrammed with lesson specific content to facilitate interaction during classroom activities.

Benefits to my students

Students with low verbal skills and/or physical disabilities will have greater opportunities to more actively participate in large and small group activities.

Budget Narrative

Based on previous experience utilizing an iPad with a specific student based on their need for assistive technology, last year, we implemented the use of a donated iPad to which all students had access. We had great success using a full size iPad with a child-friendly protective cover that made it very portable and safe to use throughout our learning environment. We located and purchased some low cost/no cost apps which supported our curriculum content. Unfortunately, this donated iPad is no longer available for my classroom this year. The purchase of this iPad, cover, and apps would greatly benefit my students as a permanent part of my program.
