Just as there are food deserts where produce is hard to find, there are also areas that are "book deserts" where books are hard to find. I am a new teacher and I want to be sure my students can find tasty reads when they enter my classroom. My classroom library should provide a diverse array of books that are high-interest, age-appropriate and relevant to my students. Any student should be able to stop for a "nibble" and find something that suits them. I want to purchase at least 100 books using these funds, and shop again at least once a year to keep the shelves stocked.

Project Goal

Just as there are food deserts where produce is hard to find, there are also areas that are "book deserts" where books are hard to find. I am a new teacher and I want to be sure my students can find tasty reads when they enter my classroom. My classroom library should provide a diverse array of books that are high-interest, age-appropriate and relevant to my students. Any student should be able to stop for a "nibble" and find something that suits them. I want to purchase at least 100 books using these funds, and shop again at least once a year to keep the shelves stocked.

How Project Benefits Students

Students can not succeed without reading, regardless of the subject. I want my students to be able to find books of interest on their classroom library shelves. As a new teacher I will be working with my students and my media specialist to select high-interest books that will connect with students. The best way to raise readers is to provide them with quality and high-interest reading materials.

Expected Outcome(s)

Students should always be able to find a delicious read when they have finished their work for the day. I want to have books they have chosen, and those that fit their interests and needs available for my students. When the selection grows "rotten", I want to have the base to buy a new array and freshen it up. Students should be able to find books even in the desert.

Detailed Cost Summary

Books will be purchased with the assistance of our media specialist from Scholastic Reading club, Barnes and Noble books and First Book MarketPlace. We want quality and quantity with these funds.
