The purpose of this project is to motivate new English Language Learners to read books, fiction and non-fiction and then be able to speak and write about their book. This would be accomplished by using e-readers in the classroom which would help to take away the stigma of “baby books”. The format of an e-reader helps to take that away.

Goal

The purpose of this project is to motivate new English Language Learners to read books, fiction and non-fiction and then be able to speak and write about their book. This would be accomplished by using e-readers in the classroom which would help to take away the stigma of “baby books”. The format of an e-reader helps to take that away.

What will be done with my students

First, an app called Storia will be used to create a personalized bookshelf for each student. Those bookshelves will be created after a student has completed an interest inventory. That way the books chosen will be tailored toward individual interests. Students will use the e-readers to read to themselves, to read with a partner, and work on writing or word work related to their reading. This will allow small group lessons to occur at the same time. They will also work on creating book trailers about the books they have read. Students will be expected to highlight words about the character, setting, problems or other elements of the story while reading with the e-reader. These highlighted words will be used as textual evidence for supporting conclusions, comparing and contrasting elements of stories, and other reading skills.

Benefits to my students

In order to help my New English Language learners succeed, I incorporate project-based learning that incorporates technology, to help to provide the components of authentic learning. This in turn fosters a comfortable environment for students new to the English Language to read, write, and speak. This learning environment, and the use of motivating technology helps to push students to reach beyond their comfort level and to grow academically and build their confidence and poise. The draw of technology also helps to pull reluctant readers into books that might not otherwise read. Also, the Kindle Fire also allows students to have an audio of most books that are available for the device.

Budget Narrative

The Kindle Fire HD is available at this lower cost due to an Amazon Prime account, the covers would protect the Kindles, and the E-books would supplement the free books available on Storia, Kindle and other e-book sites.
