Goal

Students will be able to hear the difference between tuned drums and perform learned rhythms in the style of a marching band.

What will be done with my students

Students will be introduced to a variety challenging marching rhythms. Students will performs them using drumsticks on the tables. The teacher will have the drums tuned to four pitches. Using the tunable drums, students will perform selected parts together, making a cadence. Students will ultimately perform their pattern at the same time.

Benefits to my students

Using the drum in this capacity teaches the students to work in their specific role while working together as a cohesive unit. It also creates an interest in marching band as a subject selection for 6th grade as well as an overall appreciation for the arts and the work it takes to perfect their art. Due to the fact that drums are such a highly respected instrument amongst youth, this project helps to create a sense of self confidence while starting and finishing a cadence with their peers.

Budget Narrative

23 red drums at $25.49 each is $586.27 at ToysRus.com. This would impact all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders.
