My goal is to supply my classroom with professional flexible seating equipment in my classroom. This is my 13th year of teaching and I find that the children of today are struggling more and more with remaining focused. They need to consistently redirect their energy, so I want to transform my classroom into an area that will help those kids stride to do their best without distracting everyone else around them.

Goal

My goal is to supply my classroom with professional flexible seating equipment in my classroom. This is my 13th year of teaching and I find that the children of today are struggling more and more with remaining focused. They need to consistently redirect their energy, so I want to transform my classroom into an area that will help those kids stride to do their best without distracting everyone else around them.

What will be done with my students

Currently, I have 8 students labeled ADHD and 3 who have not been labeled, but have many of the characteristics. Due to my tight financial budget, I have put many make shift items into place. For example, I have wrapped yarn around the bottom of many of the students' chair's to allow them to have a place to bounce with their feet. It helps to redirect their energy. I have also borrowed a stability disc from another teacher and I have had numerous stools donated to my room which my husband has cut to size and painted for my kids. I have also had many of the desks raised to their highest height because many of my students would rather stand or lean on their desk then use a traditional chair.

Benefits to my students

I have wanted to implement this type of seating in my classroom for years, but felt very restricted to conform to the traditional seating arrangement. However, I started it from the very beginning of school and expressed to both my parents and students that proper usage was essential for learning and safety. Both my students and their parents signed a contract stating that all the equipment would be used properly at all times. I have found such wonderful benefits and I have only implemented it for the last 7 weeks. The kids seem so much more focused and there are less behavior distractions. So many teachers who have been to my room are very excited to learn about all the different centers/areas that I have introduced to the students this year.

Budget Narrative

My children work in groups each day. They have a central area where they share materials which could be stored neatly on the 3 Tier rolling cart. In addition, the additional flexible seating material would help those children who currently do not have materials, but could desperately use. Currently, the yarn on the bottom of the kids chairs really takes a beating, so the extra strong rubber bands will help from the natural wear and tare with the yarn.
