Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

6th-8th grade art students participated in a mural arts program as part of our school's positive behavior support initiative and improvement plan. All student artists were responsible for brainstorming ideas related to theme's of respect, accountability, effort and safety. After a peer review, thumbnail sketches, and much collaboration, 4 final sketches were chosen and developed into murals to be hung on the school walls at various locations throughout the building. These murals will reenforce positive behavior and promote a growth mindset as established by the school's behaviour committee. We will continue to support this initiative in the upcoming years and look forward to using art for social commentary by supporting and promoting positive behavior through this universal language.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this lesson is for art students to design, create, and install numerous collaborative murals to support positive behavior and become permanent displays throughout the school. This will implement part of our 2017-2018 School Improvement Plan Strategy: To display student art and encouraging quotes on the walls of the school in order to meet the Walton County District Improvement Plan Behavior Objective #2: Design a positive school atmosphere where values and beliefs about learning and student success are displayed. Through these murals, students will be encouraged to see their potential and challenge themselves allowing them to realize a greater sense of purpose at school and beyond in their community. Art speaks a universal language and with these positive growth mindset based messages, these murals will ultimately improve the psychological well-being and school engagement of students.

What will be done with my students

Students will work together to use digital technology, experiment with new materials and techniques, and apply various higher order thinking skills associated with the studio habits required for such a large scale project. The logistics and collaboration required for creating each mural will involve: brainstorming themes required to promote a growth mindset, sketching ideas, choosing color schemes, planning designs/grids using digital technology systems such as photoshop, transferring designs, prepping and painting the polytab surface, revision, reflection, and installation. 2D & 3D art students will be broken up into small groups and assigned a mural to create; along with rubrics and an artist statement to accompany the finished product.

Benefits to my students

This activity will create a community of learners and artists that will use their skills to promote a positive, growth mindset based learning environment for all students and faculty. Furthermore. it will also help art students to develop an understanding for the artistic processes required to create public art. Students will also take part in helping the school to meet its improvement and positive behavior support goals with the production of these aesthetically pleasing and inspiring collaborative murals. This lesson satisfies an across the curriculum approach to learning, considering students will be designing murals for different disciplines and areas throughout the school. This project meets 21st century technology and innovation standards with the use of digital technology to create the murals. All students will be instructed on how to look at art and manage their behavior while in the presence of art and working artists.

Budget Narrative

The timeline for this project is 1 semester to complete 4-6 murals. The polytab fabric is rather expensive, but will allow for the students to work in groups on different sections of the mural while inside the classroom. Then it will be applied, similar to a wallpaper, directly on the cinder block hallways. The polytab fabric must be purchased from a distributor, QST Industries, in North Carolina. Polytab is sold by full rolls only, 60” x 250” yards, priced at $1.42/yd. The Adobe photoshop cost includes desktop and app publications and is for a year-long membership with a teacher or public school discount.
