Goal

We would like to set-up areas throughout our classrooms and one large calming classroom to support teaching self-regulation, calming, and returning to our learning environments with a positive attitude. Along with skills to help them independently deal with adversity or "big feelings," and become successful parts of their learning, family, and outside community. 

 

What will be done with my students

Self-regulation areas would support all students learning to identify their big feelings, teach them calming techniques, and increase their time engaging in positive learning environments. They would also provide our many students with sensory disorders to come to calm space instead of going home and missing out on the remainder of the learning day. In addition, these students would have access to a teacher that can teach them self-regulation and communication skills to use in the classroom setting. 

 

Benefits to my students

All children need support in self-regulation to become positive members of their school, home, and community. In our school, the most at-risk students benefit from calm areas that support them learning how to self-regulate their feelings, express their wants and needs in a clam manner, and effectively communicate with teachers and peers. These skills will also provide them with skills that will help them be successful parts of their family and community. 

 

Describe the Students

Many of our students follow behavioral and/or individual education plans that call for social emotional learning related to self-regulation. We also have several students with family situations that cause them great stress and/or have conditions (ASD; sensory disorders; etc.…) that increase their need for self-regulation and communication skills. In addition, we have three classrooms of students in our “access” program and these students need specialized support to gain self-regulation and communication skills .
