Goal

My goal for this request is to gather funds to buy materials for student projects to enhance student learning through visual aids. Each class will create a life size skeleton using everyday materials working collaboratively in groups.

What will be done with my students

Each class will work together to create a life size skeleton using everyday materials. The class is divided into seven groups and assigned a section of the skeleton to build. They are given life size models of each bone, but then must use creative materials to build each bone and connect all sections as a class to hang up. This is a yearly activity that allows students to work collaboratively toward a common goal and learn about the skeletal system. This connects to my curriculum as I teach Anatomy and Physiology. My students will gain an appreciation for the complexity of the skeletal system.

Benefits to my students

All my 110 Anatomy students will benefit from this project. Students will gain a new appreciation for the complexity, size, and shape of all the bones in the skeletal system. They will not just be looking at pictures of bones, but they will build models of the actual bones in the human body. Students will get to experience an inquiry project as they decide what materials to use from a variety of options that I have. Also, they will get real life experience when tackling a problem. Critical thinking will be used to determine the best plan of action. Resilience will be displayed when they experience a problem with their first choice of material and need to make changes along the way and not give up. They will experience working with others on an extended assignment that requires them to listen to others and come to an agreement to move forward. This is a challenge for students, but in the end learn a lot about how to solve problems with others and the skeletal system.

Describe the Students

My students include mostly students in the Medical Program at Boca Ciega High School as they are required to take the class, but the class is open to any 10-12 student on campus regardless of their program. Most of my students are mid-high level students. I do have 9 504 students, 9 ESE students, and 2 ELL students. This project is great for students who enjoy working with their hands. Also, visual experiences are helpful for students where English is not their first language.

Budget Narrative

These items will allow students the freedom to think creatively and choose what materials they think will be best for their bones. Students will be thinking "outside the box" using critical thinking skills and working collaboratively, all "real-world" skills.
