In our 3D art (sculpture) classes, we spend the second half of the year learning how to create hand-built pottery artworks. It is my goal to provide students with the necessary tools and technology for creating these artworks so that they can be most successful in bringing their artistic visions to life! For our class, we are in need of a clay slab roller (see attached image).

Goal

In our 3D art (sculpture) classes, we spend the second half of the year learning how to create hand-built pottery artworks. It is my goal to provide students with the necessary tools and technology for creating these artworks so that they can be most successful in bringing their artistic visions to life! For our class, we are in need of a clay slab roller (see attached image).

What will be done with my students

Students will be assigned multiple clay projects involving slab construction (once of the basic techniques for hand-building). Students will be trained by me on how to use the slab roller for their work so that they can use it independently as needed. Student artwork produced using the slab roller as a tool will potentially be entered in district-wide art shows at local art museums!

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to make better use of their studio time using the slab roller. Hand-rolling out clay into consistent usable slabs is time consuming and quite difficult for beginners. With the aid of a slab roller, students will achieve a higher and quicker rate of success with their pottery work--motivating them to continue their efforts in class rather than possibly becoming discouraged due to difficulty and failure with hand-rolling slabs.

Describe the Students

A variety of students will be using the slab roller, including level 1 and 2 3D Art students. I have a mixture of both lower and higher performers. I have 11 ESE students who will be using the slab roller. I have IB students who will be using the slab roller as well. My students are grades 9-12.

Budget Narrative

Slab rollers can cost anywhere between $400 and $4,000. I am seeking one in the lower to middle range of this spectrum if possible. I feel that roughly $700-1,000 would purchase a well-rated, dependable slab roller for my students that would last for many, many years to come.
