My goal is to make reading more accessible and less stigmatizing for my struggling readers. I would like to provide books for my readers who are reading below grade level. Most intermediate students are too embarrassed to read books at their level if they are too far below grade level because they appear to be too "easy" to the other students. My students need more books that are accessible to them that do not look like beginning level chapter books.

Goal

My goal is to make reading more accessible and less stigmatizing for my struggling readers. I would like to provide books for my readers who are reading below grade level. Most intermediate students are too embarrassed to read books at their level if they are too far below grade level because they appear to be too "easy" to the other students. My students need more books that are accessible to them that do not look like beginning level chapter books.

What will be done with my students

These high interest, low level decodable books are chapter books that look just like the chapter books other fourth graders are reading, except they focus on specific phonics/morphology skills. These are the skills that my lower level students need to practice in order to become more fluent readers. This aligns with our district's goal of providing more systematic phonics instruction. These books would be used in small group instruction as well as independent reading books for classroom and home use.

Benefits to my students

The benefit to my students will be substantial. Currently, my struggling readers are avoiding books they can actually read and choosing books above their ability so they will not stand out. I believe these high interest, low level decodable books will make reading more accessible to my students who are still learning to read.

Describe the Students

My students are in fourth grade general education. I have a variety of reading levels including special education students (with IEP's), students with accommodations (504's), as well as ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students.
