Goal

My goal is to specifically increase boys' reading achievement and enjoyment within my classes through the purchase of highly engaging and sought-after books for independent reading. While I am targeted boys, the girls in my classroom will also benefit from many of these titles as well.

What will be done with my students

Students have already been given a survey of the genres, authors and topics of books they are interested in reading. These books will refresh a very old and outdated classroom library to encourage boys, especially, to read and want to read. Books will be used for independent and at-home reading as well as serve as avenues for boys to have book talks to encourage one another to read the book they just read. Many of my boys are participating in the Boys Read program, and after it is over, I want them to have easy access to books they just cannot wait to get their hands on.

Benefits to my students

The benefits to my students are unlimited. I want to instill a love of reading, especially to boys, as they seem to be the most reluctant readers. The more they read highly engaging, appropriate books, the better they will comprehend. Their fluency will increase. They will be exposed to more vocabulary words and will gain better knowledge of topics of interest. In addition to reading, this will improve writing as research has shown that excellent readers also make excellent writers.

Describe the Students

In one classroom I have 15 boys and 8 girls. Of those 15 boys, 9 scored either a Level 1 or 2 on FAST Cycle 1, only 2 of those are ESE students. In my second class, I have 10 boys, 11 girls. Of those 10, 6 are either level 1 or 2 on FAST Cycle 1. Only one of those are ESE. That is 60% of my boys in both classes are low achieving in reading and are very reluctant readers. I am also putting a focus on leveled reading, targeted small group instruction and flexible seating options to get these students to not just perform better...but to truly enjoy reading.

Budget Narrative

This budget is to refresh my old and outdated classroom library with high interest, engaging and multileveled books specifically to promote achievement, excitement, joy and a love of reading especially for my students who are boys.
