The goal of this project is for students to visualize how vaping impacts your health by conducting a series of experiments. Students will study the addictiveness of vaping and test how flavored vapes actually impact lung cells. They will then test samples to see how flavored vape affects lung cells.

Goal

The goal of this project is for students to visualize how vaping impacts your health by conducting a series of experiments. Students will study the addictiveness of vaping and test how flavored vapes actually impact lung cells. They will then test samples to see how flavored vape affects lung cells.

What will be done with my students

Students will begin their study of the impact that vaping has on the human body by studying the chemicals commonly found in vapes. They will study the affect that these chemicals have on the body and then run simulated urine tests using the "Risk of Respiratory Damage" kit to study how the concentration of these chemicals in the body increases by vaping. They will then study the effects that the flavoring in vapes has on the human body by running simulated tests to determine the effects of these flavoring chemicals on lung cells using the "Flavored E-Cigarettes" kit. Students will finish

Students will conclude their study of the damage of vapes by modeling neurotransmitter pathways that show how nicotine actually causes addiction. The models in the "Nicotine Addiction" kit let students visualize the process of nicotine tolerance, dependence, addiction, withdrawal and recovery that take in place in the brain. These studies will provide all students with the opportunity to conductive scientific testing to better understand a real-world problem that pertains directly to their lives.

Benefits to my students

Every one of my 120 Biology students will get a hands-on laboratory experience that demonstrates the impacts of vaping. This experience will provide them with the knowledge to identify and describe the toxic chemicals in e-cigarettes and be able to calculate how these concentrate in the human body with use. They will also be able to explain the physiological processes of tolerance, addiction, and withdrawal and use this information to make better life choices. These experiences will lead to a student generated anti-vape campus campaign.

Describe the Students

My classes consist of 120 9th Grade students that are eager to learn. Eighty-eight of my students are low performing in reading and 91% are low performing in math based on their 8th grade FAST scores. Four percent of my students are high performing based on these same test results. My class consists of 15 ESE students.

Budget Narrative

The requested $978.50 will cover all costs associated with this grant. All items will be ordered from Science Take-Out. All items will be ordered together as they will be used in series to fully understand the impact of vaping. The amount of each item ordered will allow all students to work in groups of two to have an in-depth, hands-on experience.
