Goal

The goal of this project is to provide hands-on practice for students working with digital camera equipment in order to understand the elements of photojournalism, film, and print media.

What will be done with my students

In order to prepare students for the world of photojournalism, they need to practice and hone their photography skills using up-to-date equipment. Students develop their photography skills all year long through various lessons and activities geared toward creating the school yearbook and a magazine portfolio for Cambridge. Students will learn how to operate a DSLR camera, including how to use interchangeable lenses.

Students will also use the equipment to develop their photojournalism skills by photographing school events throughout the year for both the yearbook production and the school website/social media.

Benefits to my students

These activities and lesson help my students gain real-world, hands-on experience working as an event photographer. Many students continue developing their photography skills after graduating from school, working for local studios, freelance or college coursework. Gaining hands-on experience with professional equipment brings the field of photojournalism to life for these students, and helps them hone their skills in a variety of settings. Many of the students who take this course have never held a professional DSLR camera. In addition, students who successfully complete the magazine portfolio with original photography and the written paper earn international college credit through our Cambridge diploma program, which this course, AICE Media Studies, is an elective option.

Describe the Students

The student population at this high school is very diverse. We currently meet the requirements for Title 1 designation based on our socioeconomic breakdown. The students in my course for Media Studies reflect this diversity. I have 50% performing below standards in Reading and Writing. For over half of the students in this course, this is the only college-level course they will take during their tenure with the school. Half of the students are Cambridge diploma students, taking college-level courses for 3-4 years and earning college credit by passing the exams. The other half are low performers who were placed in the course due to the availability of elective courses. These students thrive in a more hands-on, practical learning environment where access to equipment is provided as they can not afford to purchase their own equipment.

Budget Narrative

A 21-pc bundle for a Canon Rebel T7 sells for $400 - $500 depending on the accessories added on Amazon. An additional telephoto lens with 55-250 zoom sells for $249 (plus tax) on Amazon. The camera equipment bag to house the new equipment and a few older models ranges in cost between $25 - $35 dollars with Amazon, Best Buy, Target, or Walmart. This grant would allow the program to secure one additional functioning DSLR camera with the standard 18-55 lens, plus an additional telephoto zoom lens to use for sports photography and new camera bags to house the equipment. The cost above takes into account local tax and potential delivery charges if necessary.
