Describe the Students

Grade Levels: I work with a total of 140 students, primarily in 7th and 8th grades. These students are at a critical stage in their educational journey, transitioning from middle school to high school, and they are at an age where they are developing their interests and skills.

STEM Explorers Club: In addition to my regular classroom, I lead a STEM Explorers Club, which consists of 20 enthusiastic students. These students have a particular interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects, and they are eager to explore these fields in more depth.

Gifted Students: My class includes 10 gifted students who demonstrate exceptional abilities and potential in various academic areas. They often require differentiated instruction to challenge and nurture their talents.

ESE (Exceptional Student Education) Students: There are 4 students with exceptional needs who benefit from specialized support and accommodations to ensure their success in the classroom. My commitment to inclusivity and personalized instruction is crucial for their growth.

504 Plans: I have 15 students with 504 plans, which means they have specific accommodations and modifications in place to address their unique learning needs and ensure equal access to the curriculum.

English Language Learners (ELLs): There are 6 English Language Learners in my class who may be in the process of acquiring proficiency in English. They require additional support to bridge language barriers while engaging in academic content.

Title I School: My school operates under the Title I program, which means that all my students come from families with limited economic resources. This designation underscores the importance of providing equitable access to quality education and support services.

In this diverse educational setting, my students come from a variety of backgrounds and have a wide range of abilities. By seeking funding for Birdbrain Technologies' Hummingbird Classroom Flock, I am not only enriching their learning experiences but also ensuring that all students, regardless of their background or learning profile, have the opportunity to explore and excel in the exciting world of STEM education.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting funding to acquire the Birdbrain Technologies Hummingbird Classroom Flock to enrich the educational experiences of my 6th to 8th-grade students. This comprehensive robotics kit is designed to serve 8 to 12 students at a time, providing them with the necessary components to create four fully-functional robots per Flock. The components included in each Flock are as follows:

4 Premium Kits: The heart of each Flock, the Premium Kits, contain a wide range of components such as sensors, motors, LEDs, and connectors. These kits empower our students to design and build robots that demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills.

1 Carrying Case: The carrying case ensures the safe storage and transportation of the robotics equipment. It allows us to easily move the kits between classrooms, ensuring that students have access to these valuable learning resources wherever they are needed.

4 Screwdrivers: These tools are essential for assembling and maintaining the robots. They enable our students to engage in hands-on learning as they construct and modify their creations.

2 Wire Strippers: Wire strippers are crucial for electrical work and safety. They provide students with the means to prepare and connect wires securely, teaching them proper handling techniques.

In addition to these hardware components, all Hummingbird Bit Robotics Kits come with valuable educational resources and support:

Free Classroom-Tested and Standards-Aligned Learning Materials: The provided programming tutorials, lesson plans, and printable student activities are designed to align with educational standards. They help our educators deliver engaging and curriculum-aligned robotics lessons.

Out-of-the-Box Compatibility: The kits are compatible with a wide range of devices, including laptops and tablets, ensuring that all our students have access to the technology.

Free Software: The provided software is tested to work seamlessly with school IT environments, reducing technical barriers for both teachers and students.

Support for Multiple Programming Environments: The kits support both block-based and text-based programming environments, including MakeCode, Python, and Java. This flexibility allows students to learn coding in a way that suits their individual preferences and skills.

Electrically Protected Connectors: These connectors ensure student safety by preventing harmful electrical connections. This feature encourages experimentation and creativity without the risk of accidents.

Free Online Professional Development: Our educators will benefit from free online professional development resources, including curriculum integration planning. This support helps our teachers effectively integrate robotics into their classrooms.

Classroom-Ready Packaging: The kits are thoughtfully designed with sturdy cases, sorting compartments, and stackable containers, making them easy to store and organize. This organization promotes efficiency and ensures that our students have all the necessary components readily available.

Validated by Research: The products have been created and validated through National Science Foundation-funded research at Carnegie Mellon University. They have also been tested in classrooms with teachers and students, assuring their quality and educational effectiveness.
