One of our goals in kindergarten is to become proficient storytellers. We do this by retelling familiar stories to include character, setting, and events. Students learn best through hands on learning. We can support this by creating a retelling center that has hands on pieces so students can act out the story. Students will be able to practice retelling stories using the pieces that match our familiar stories.

Goal

One of our goals in kindergarten is to become proficient storytellers. We do this by retelling familiar stories to include character, setting, and events. Students learn best through hands on learning. We can support this by creating a retelling center that has hands on pieces so students can act out the story. Students will be able to practice retelling stories using the pieces that match our familiar stories.

What will be done with my students

The hands on retelling pieces will be used to enhance my retelling center. The hands on retelling pieces will be available daily in this center for students to practice retelling stories. By having the pieces available for the students, they will be more engaged and have the support needed to practice and remember how the story goes while being independent of the teacher. By having the retelling pieces available in addition to the books, students will be more likely to remember the story because they are using multiple modalities while learning. Research shows that students remember more when they see it, touch it, and say it. The hands on retelling center will provide this opportunity for the students.

Benefits to my students

This project will benefit my students in multiple ways. Students will be able to practice our retelling standard independently. They will build their oral language skills as they become more familiar with the stories. They will learn to cooperate as they work with partners to tell stories and practice their listening skills. Students will be able to gain confidence as they practice each story. I have several students that speak English as their second language. This project will benefit these students with opportunities for them to practice building new vocabulary and language.

Describe the Students

My classroom is filled with 18 very energetic, excited five and six year old students. My students are excited about learning but have had limited experiences with school. A portion of my students did not attend pre-school classes, making this their very first school experience. I work at a title I school with 100% of my students qualifying for free and reduced lunch and breakfast services.

My current class includes several ESE students with varying exceptionalities including Autism, Other Health Impairments, etc. My class also includes several ESOL students who speak Ukranian, Spanish, Chinese, and Serbian.

I have several students who have already been identified as "not meeting expectations" or "low performers" and need extra support or one on one interventions.

Budget Narrative

Each kit comes with the necessary components needed to retell the story. The storytelling kits will be organized and placed in a retelling center. Students will pick one story to retell using the characters, setting, and events in the kit. The books requested will go in with the matching storytelling kit.
