The goal of the Melrose Makerspace project is to engage our scholars with creativity through the use of STEM materials.
Each week, Melrose scholars visit the library to check out books and engage in Makerspace STEM activities. These activities include building, creating, connecting, and problem solving through the use of Legos, magnatiles, robots, coding projects, 3D printing, and other materials.
The benefits of STEM activities in Makerspace areas are well documented and include increased academic performance, stress relief, problem solving skills, student engagement, critical thinking, and decision making.
Melrose Elementary School has over 350 scholars, of which nearly all are economically disadvantaged. Melrose is also a Title 1 school. We have a wide range of learners, all of which would benefit from this project.
STEM Materials will be purchased through Amazon and will include a sensory table with lid to be used with modeling foam beads, two sets of jumbo blocks to build life size creations, 4 sets of take apart dinosaurs, and building materials of magnetic blocks and PicassoTiles.
