Goal

All Pinellas County Schools share in the same mission ‘to prepare each student for college, career, and life’. Starkey Elementary is a Title 1 school, so we are continually seeking outside opportunities to ensure our students can compete with those who are more affluent than them. By implementing coding with Dash Robots the scholars will have the opportunities to increase their knowledge of coding, problem-solving, and critically thinking.  

 

What will be done with my students

Dash Robots will be used in small groups for students to understand how sequencing block coding tiles interact with the movement of the robots. Students will be able to see their code on district devices, and then witness the Dash following their created coding sequence. Teams will work together to create systems for the Dash to complete various task challenges and puzzles. When they have mastered an understanding of basic directional, they will be allowed to alter audio, visual, and recording features. As a final enrichment, teams will code Dash through various obstacle course challenges.  

 

Benefits to my students

Coding is the fundamentals of computer science, and Dash will allow students to see coding in action. Students will be able to see how technology interacts with the real world, and how technology enriches the quality of life of society. Students will have an increased love for the STEM field and gain pride, confidence, and joy. 

 

Describe the Students

We are a Title 1 school, with 100% of students receiving free breakfast, lunch and dinner. The school offers many after-school programs at no cost due to the family’s inability to pay. My gifted and talented classes ensure that students are offered challenging tasks utilizing their unique skill sets and help them prepare to be future leaders, despite their social-economic status.
