Goal

I would like to acquire an Oscilloscope to help visually reinforce what is actually happening with low voltage signals like PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) and to visualize different wave forms such as sawtooth, sine, and square waves.

What will be done with my students

The students and I will connect various devices and circuits up to the Oscilloscope. Oscilloscopes give a wealth of information about electrical signals such as wave form, frequency, and amplitude. The "scope" also shows how the signal changes over time given different parameters.

Benefits to my students

The students will benefit immensely from seeing the actual signal displayed in real time on a screen they can adjust and affect. This takes the complex world of Ohm's Law and Circuit Design out of the realm of lectures, textbooks, and whiteboards. With this piece of equipment, I can stop merely drawing Wave Forms on the whiteboard and asking the students to "imagine" what would happen if we changed A, B, or C about the circuit. Instead, they will have real, immediate feedback on fundamental electricity concepts.

Describe the Students

All of my students are Adult Ed. They come from different walks of life, different ethnicities, and different age groups. The students are here trying to better their lives and provide a career change for themselves and their families.

Budget Narrative

I am requesting funds to acquire a state-of-the-art oscilloscope from Digi-Key, priced at $951.99. This investment will significantly enhance our Electronic Systems Integration and Automation program here at Pinellas Technical College Clearwater.

The oscilloscope is a versatile tool that provides real-time visualization and analysis of electronic signals, enabling students to explore and understand complex concepts in electronics and waveform analysis. Its high-resolution display and advanced features will empower our students to delve into hands-on experiments and projects that bridge theory with practical application.

The justification for this expense lies in the direct impact it will have on our students' learning experiences. The oscilloscope will facilitate in-depth exploration of circuit behavior, signal integrity, and troubleshooting techniques. It will empower me as an instructor to demonstrate abstract concepts visually, fostering better comprehension and engagement.

Furthermore, the oscilloscope's application extends beyond the classroom. It will equip our students with valuable skills and knowledge that are in high demand in today's technology-driven job market. The ability to operate and interpret oscilloscope data is a critical competency sought by industries spanning electronics, telecommunications, and engineering.

In summary, the $951.99 investment in the Digi-Key oscilloscope aligns seamlessly with our commitment to providing a comprehensive and relevant education for our students. By integrating this tool into my Electronic Systems Integration and Automation curriculum, we will cultivate a generation of skilled and capable individuals poised to excel in both academic pursuits and future careers. Your support will directly contribute to fostering innovation, critical thinking, and technological literacy among our students.
