Goal

I am an elementary strings teacher and I've created my program to where every student, K-5, gets to touch, play, and learn the violin.The goal is to transfer their violin knowledge to the mandolin.  

 

What will be done with my students

When talking about string instruments, students at this age don't know any other stringed instrument besides what is already available in our classroom (violin, viola, cello). With mandolins in our classroom, students will be able to have the "light bulb" moment of realization where they will begin to connect the dots.  

 

Benefits to my students

The strings of a mandolin are the same strings on the violin but the mandolin played like a guitar. This educational tool will further their auditory processing, hand-eye coordination, and help students broaden their knowledge of string instruments. This will also help broaden their knowledge of different genres of music and will be a wonderful visual/auditory aid for when I talk about folk and bluegrass music.  

 

Describe the Students

Our students are lower-poverty musicians, with low test scores and ESE students, as well. While our students don't have very many means, they don't let that stop them from becoming brilliant musicians. They are full of natural rhythm and creativity; they are savvy with bright futures ahead of them. If this grant is funded, a big door of opportunity will be opened for them!
