Goal

These grant funds would be used to increase our literacy options in our school library for our growing early learning program of PK3 - K students.

What will be done with my students

At Westgate Elementary, we have increased our Early Learning program to include 3year-olds, 4-year-olds in VPK as well as our regular Kindergarten program. Expanding this program is part of the PCS Strategic Plan. At Westgate we would like to create some literacy centers in the library that classes could utilize that are tailored specifically to this age group. This would include more read-a-loud books, circle time activities, and picture books, with emphasis on rhyming.

Benefits to my students

If funded, this Project will have a direct impact on student literacy gains in our early learning program. Studies show that children who have access to books and reading in early-learning programs develop improved attention spans and better concentration skills.

Students develop resilience skills and better vocabulary when exposed to reading early.

Describe the Students

Westgate students are economically and ethnically diverse. 47% of our students are non-white. Many students live in multi-generational or transitional housing. We are a Title I School, where all of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our total population is about 550 students.

Budget Narrative

The Grant will be used to purchase Book Titles and supplies from Follett Learning and Demco.
