Goal

At San Jose Elementary our Kindergarten team has been busy making connections for our kindergartners. This grant is written to support our efforts at developing an Outdoor Classroom for our students, while simultaneously engaging in a school improvement and beautification project. Our goal is to engage our students and enhance their learning through an Indoor to Outdoor Classroom Connection.

What will be done with my students

Our students will be provided with activities and project-based learning opportunities within an outdoor learning environment. These activities and opportunities will be presented using clearly defined centers. We will also be promoting social skill development as a team effort to improve the school. The Outdoor Classroom learning environment will include centers for Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science. This grant will support the Outdoor Classroom Project’s many aspects of learning and will include implementing and maintaining class garden boxes and journaling to document our planning, reflecting, designing, making observations and collecting, displaying and analyzing data.

Benefits to my students

Our students will benefit through hands-on and project-based learning opportunities focused on developing and maintaining class garden boxes, while simultaneously improving and beautifying the school. Our students will use Language Arts skills to plan and reflect, Math skills to design and build, Science skills for research and observations and Social Studies skills to develop and maintain class garden boxes cooperatively.

Describe the Students

Our classrooms are diverse. We have students who receive ELL, ESE, Title 1, District Interventions (RAP Tutors) and behavioral support. The students are eager to learn. Many of the kindergartners we work with this year are struggling due to low social skills and difficulties problem solving and working cooperatively. Along with the introduction of a social skills curriculum, we believe this hands-on,
project-based approach to learning will strengthen our students’ skills in all areas. The additional support this grant will provide for our students will assist us in our efforts to close their achievement gaps, both socially emotionally and academically. Our families have been very supportive of our efforts to provide this learning environment for their students and have donated many objects to help us build our Outdoor Classroom.

Budget Narrative

The supplies provided through this grant will allow us to offer our students an extension to their learning from our Indoor Classroom to our Outdoor Classroom. Many families have offered their interest and support in our many efforts to provide this Outdoor Learning environment to the students. They have also donated many needed supplies for developing the centers.
