Goal

The goal of this project is to create a school wide tile mosaic on the steps of our outdoor amphitheater promoting teamwork in the process. Every student and teacher will work together to create this permanent installation.

What will be done with my students

All 550 K-5 students and teachers at Brooker Creek Elementary have already begun designing and making ceramic tiles by hand to create a collaborative school wide Florida Wetlands mosaic on the steps of our outdoor amphitheater.

Local artist and owner of Safety Harbor Art and Music Center, Heather Richardson, will be working with myself and our students to finalize the plan and piece the mosaic together for installation. Over the last two years, we have focused lessons on Florida wildlife, wetlands, conservation and the natural beauty and art of our state.

This school-wide project will add a permanent installation to our grand theme of "Brooker Creek Elementary Preserve". It is our ultimate goal to create a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere in the central courtyard of our campus for all students, staff and parents to enjoy.

Benefits to my students

The process of designing and creating this mosaic provides an essential outlet to help my students grow in nearly all areas of their development. It stimulates creativity through original drawings and plans, provides problem solving skills during the layout process, fine motor skills of adding texture to their clay tiles, visual-spacial processing, memory, self control and teamwork/ social skills.

After months of hard work, students will also benefit by seeing their original ideas come to life in a large scale permanent work of art to be enjoyed for years to come.

Describe the Students

The students at Brooker Creek are varied in academic performance but extremely high performing in our visual arts program. Through my own personal goal and deliberate practice plan, I have been incorporating PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) to motivate all students and instill confidence and teamwork through this collaborative school-wide project. Every student is included and successful regardless of their academic performance.

This project bridges the learning gap often felt by our lower performing and ESE students. 100% participation and success.

Budget Narrative

Funds requested will be used to pay our visiting artist, Heather Richardson, owner of the Safety Harbor Art and Music Center her weekly fee for facilitation, instruction and installation of the tile mosaic we have been designing since the beginning of the school year.
