Goal

I am interested in starting an Astronomy Club at HMSHS to both foster interest in Space Science among students who have not yet discovered it, and to provide an outlet for students who are already interested in and excited about space.

What will be done with my students

Students will meet semi-weekly before school, during which time we will explore a general space topic on a whole-group basis, and work on individual projects on a small-group basis. My lab has sufficient space both for meetings and for the storage of projects/supplies.

The club will host an Astronomy night each semester, during which we will showcase projects we have been working on, and make the telescope available to the community on a supervised basis to view objects in the night sky.

The year will culminate in a trip to the Kennedy Space Center for students who have met attendance/participation and conduct thresholds. I'd like to make the trip on a Saturday to prevent the students from missing school and to eliminate the need for substitute teachers. I have asked for the cost of the school bus in the grant, but will cover the cost of admission through fundraisers and student contribution.

Benefits to my students

-Students who are not currently interested will become interested in and excited about Science

-For students who already have an interest in Space, the Club will generate curiosity and provide additional motivation

-Give students insight into potential space-related careers and how they can prepare for them

-Provide a positive after-school outlet that is both fun and academically beneficial
