Walton Education Foundation

The goal of our project is to increase the academic achievement of students who struggle to learn through traditional teaching methods and practices. The materials will be used with students who have already been identified through a data collection process as needing additional direct instruction. These students are currently unable to successfully work at grade level. The snap word cards and right brain math resources are specifically designed to target students who learn by visualizing the content being taught.
Our goal is to help our struggling learners attain a foundational knowledge of reading and math computation so they can make academic gains. The academic benchmarks and grade level expectations for this group of students includes phonics and word recognition, word context and meaning, number recognition, operations and algebraic thinking (specifically addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), place value, and fractions. The following list of standards (and corresponding access point standards, which are not listed) address the previously mentioned academic targets: LAFS.K.RF.3, LAFS.1.RF.3, LAFS.2.RF.3, LAFS.3.RF.3, LAFS.4.RF.3; LAFS.K.RF.4, LAFS.1.RF.4, LAFS.2.RF.4, LAFS.3.RF.4, LAFS.4.RF.4, LAFS.5.RF.4; LAFS.K.L.3, LAFS.1.L.3, LAFS.2.L.3; as well as Math learning standards and access points: MAFS.K.CC.1, MAFS.K.CC.2, MAFS.K.CC.3; MAFS.K.OA.1, MAFS.1.OA.1, MAFS.2.OA.1, MAFS.3.OA.1, MAFS.4.OA.1, MAFS.1.NBT.1, MAFS.1.NBT.2, MAFS.1.NBT.3, MAFS.2.NBT.1, MAFS.2.NBT.2, MAFS.3.NBT.1, MAFS.3.NF.1, MASF.4.NF.1

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 31

Receiving this grant benefited 31 students who have been identified as needing additional direct instruction. The snap word and right brain curriculum materials helped our visual learners grasp the content being taught. We used STAR tests to progress monitor our student growth. STAR is given each quarter to all students. We comapred student scores for the beginning and end of the school year, then averaged the gains in points. Our 31 students have an average increase of 91 points. I feel like the new currculum helped my students gain a better understanding of the concepts. Thank you so much for allowing my class to use the new materials. We will continue to use these curriculum materials in future school years

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

The classroom teachers will be responsible for implementing the activities in their classrooms as well as in the resource pull out classroom. ELA activities will include ABC ordering, reading assessment, vocabulary bingo, vocabulary crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blank, go fish, illustrate the sentence, making phrases, making sentences, making words, picture cards, sentence unscramble, sound manipulation, word searches, word sort, word wall games, and a write about it section. In math we will be presenting flash cards for numerals and math facts, with a story and picture for each. This will allow the students to associate numbers and facts with pictures and stories increasing their memory retention. We plan to use the materials in small group or one on one direct instruction daily in our classrooms throughout the entire school year.

Benefits to my students

All of our students are currently being assessed through STAR testing in both reading and math. Referencing previous STAR test score data and comparing it to this year’s scores will give us an accurate measure of growth and a comparison of growth percentages. Currently, 30 students are being served through our direct instruction and will be assessed and evaluated throughout the year. We estimate an average of 30 students for each of the following years.
