Walton Education Foundation

Project Summary and Objective:
Receipt of this grant will provide the opportunity for students to receive tiered instruction, work at levels of text based on their differentiated needs, and collaborate. Students will learn how to utilize technology to increase their reading performance.

Goals:
Based on mid-August 2016 STAR Literacy data, only 31% of our first graders performed above the 50th percentile. Our goal is to increase the percentage of our students performing at or above grade level to 70%.

Standards Targeted (included, but not limited to):
1. Florida Standards addressing the Reading Components of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and oral language.
2. Students will develop and improve their Reading Foundational Skills and will know and apply grade level phonics and word analysis skills.
3. Students will read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension of both literary and informational text.

School Improvement Plan:
This grant supports Goal #1 of our School Improvement Plan to increase our Student Growth Percentile (SGP) median scores. As each student's score improves, their SGP rises. This goal addresses all tiers of students, but particularly our Tier 2 and Tier 3 students. It supports our strategies to implement differentiated reading instruction and provide intervention resources.

Walton County School District Progress Monitoring Guide:
This grant will support the Progress Monitoring Guide. The use of prescriptive reading programs through the use of tablets will assist teachers in targeting additional individual instruction for students who are struggling with particular reading components. It provides accurate timely data on which to base the students' assignments.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 35

Mrs. Gardner and I (Mrs. Hertzing) have had tremendous success this year while allowing our students to use the tablets for reading skills.  At the beginning of the school year, I had 65% at or above grade level according to the STAR Reading Assessment.  Now I have 88% of my students at or above grade level.  Mrs. Gardner had 56% at or above grade level at the beginning, and now she has 78% at or above.  Our students used these Acer tablets to access various web sites to enhance their reading abilities.  They read books and took comprehension tests on them through the Renaissance Learning program.  I had 9 students who met their goal of 30 points with 80% accuracy.  That is the most students I have ever had.  I had the student with the highest number of AR points in first grade in my class as well.  She read and tested on 260 books for a total of 130 AR points.  Our students enjoyed going to LearningA-Z.com and working on phonics and phonemic awareness activities.  It was nice to have so many tablets so that we could pair up from time-to-time and do collaborative partner work.

Benefits to my students

Evaluation Plan:

Initial data is based on the beginning of the year STAR Literacy test administered August 2016. The STAR test will be given three more times throughout the course of the 2016-17 school year. The STAR test provides student information such as grade equivalency scores, scaled scores and student growth for each student. These tests will be used to monitor each student’s progress and to adjust their individualized Reading program as warranted. The success of this grant will be determined by comparing the final STAR test results with the baseline data for all students who were enrolled for both tests. The grant will be considered successful if the number of students performing at or above the 50th percentile has increased to 70%
