Walton Education Foundation

I am requesting five refurbished ipad 2s with cases for my classroom. The ipads will be used for many purposes. The goal I am focusing on is addition and subtraction fluency. This is a math standard in the area of Operations and Algebraic Thinking. Addition and Subtraction facts are the foundation for several second grade math standards. Students must add and subtract within 1,000 in second grade, and must solve word problems by adding and subtracting within 100.
Students need to practice their addition and subtraction facts everyday to achieve mastery. The most engaging, effective way to do this is through internet websites like Moby Max. Five iPads in the classroom would be enough for every child to have access to practice, everyday. The second grade standard for this skill is Operations and algebraic Thinking, MAFA.2.OA.2.2. It states that students need to fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies, and students need to know all of the sums of two one-digit numbers by the end of second grade. My desired outcome if for each student to be able to practice math facts every day, on Moby Max, so it can be differentiated to the facts that they need. The website tracks their progress and advances students as they become more fluent.
Currently, on Moby Max, 50% of my students have mastered addition fluency, my goal is for 80% of my class to be fluent in addition, by Spring of 2017. Only 15% of my class have mastered subtraction facts, at this time, my goal 60% to be fluent in subtraction, by Spring of 2017.
The students need to be fluent with their addition and subtraction facts in order to have success adding and subtracting three digit numbers. Students will be able to start on multiplication facts after mastering the second grade standard. This allows them to exceed the benchmarks set for them in second grade.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 19

Thank you for your donation of funds used to buy five ipads for my classroom.  With the addition of these devices, my students were able to practice their math facts every morning.  My goal was for 80% of my students to know their addition math facts.  I am happy to report 100% of my students know their addition math facts, because they were able to practice online everday!

My goal was for 60% of my students to master their subtraction facts.  Currently 67% of my students have mastered their subtraction facts.

The ipads have made a tremendous impact on my students' learning.  I am so happy to be able to start students with ipads at the beginning of next school year.  I know your donation will continue to benefit Walton County students for many years to come.

Thank you!

What will be done with my students

This year, approximately 20 students will be impacting by receiving a grant for more technology in the classroom. I estimate that at least 20 students will be impacted by these iPads each year, for at least 10 years. I am requesting cases recommended for children and will teach the expectations and rules for handling iPads.
When students come in to class each morning, they unpack and begin their day with morning work. The expectation will be for each student to log onto Moby Max and complete the Fact Fluency portion of the computer program. The program starts each child with a basic facts diagnostic test and places them on the level they are currently performing at. Each student works on facts for five minutes. Classroom contests will be set up to see who can show the highest rate of growth in a certain period. Students will be challenged to pass addition, then subtraction, and end the year, exploring multiplication facts. Students will get to become Addition All-Stars when they pass, and Subtraction Super Stars when they pass. They will get to sign their name on a special poster and celebrate their success. They will also get a special tag to wear on their classroom necklace, “bragging” about their victory. My goal is to praise the effort as well as the success, so if someone is really trying and working hard they will earn a special tag for their classroom necklace. The student will be responsible for knowing how to log in and access the Fact Fluency section of Moby Max. I will check to make sure students have completed the task daily. Students will tell me when they reach a new skill, because they will be proud and want to share the news, and I will verify with the teacher report in Moby Max.

Benefits to my students

Currently, on Moby Max, 50% of my students have mastered addition fluency, my goal is for 80% of my class to be fluent in addition, by Spring of 2017. Only 15% of my class has mastered subtraction facts, at this time, my goal 60% to be fluent in subtraction, by Spring of 2017.
I also expect STAR sores to have a Student Growth Percentile rate of at least 40%. I expect the growth to be largely impacted by the fluency of the math facts.
Twenty students will be impacted this year by adding iPads to the classroom. An estimated twenty students each year for ten years, will be impacted, since these items will be well cared for. This makes a total of 120 students impacted by five iPads in the classroom.
