This year we are working on building student, school, and community culture and pride as an entire school. To help in this process we have divided our students into six Houses. To build a culture of learning and school pride we would like to have the Houses beautify the school by painting the ceiling tiles to reflect House, school, and community pride. The paintings will incorporate images and phrases that encompass the attributes of their House, our school motto and mascot, and from the students’ cultural backgrounds.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1070

We could not have imagined the impact of this project on our campus. We used the paint supplies to paint ceiling tiles in accordance to our Houses that we implemented on campus this year. The students worked in teams to paint the tiles to reflect the characteristics embodied by the Houses. Students painted sayings, pictures, House crests, House mottos, and more on their tiles. The tiles were then placed into the common areas of the school, in the main hallways. It is wonderful to see the students walking through the halls and looking up at the tiles. They find the tiles they painted, they point them out to their friends. Painting the ceiling tiles has created a sense of community and comradery amongst all students and staff here at Deltona Middle. When visitors walk through the hallways they can't help but stop and look at the tiles, admiring the work and creativity. Each week it has been a different House's opportunity to paint and each week the Houses get more and more excited to add to the tiles. Even the staff and adults on campus have been eager to participate. Everyone on campus enjoys the art and creativity that has been added to our common areas. We are hoping to do this again next year and even take the tiles when they build the new school.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

This year we are working on building student, school, and community culture and pride as an entire school. To help in this process we have divided our students into six Houses. To build a culture of learning and school pride we would like to have the Houses beautify the school by painting the ceiling tiles to reflect House, school, and community pride. The paintings will incorporate images and phrases that encompass the attributes of their House, our school motto and mascot, and from the students’ cultural backgrounds.

What will be done with my students

This activity will take place throughout the school year and will impact all buildings on campus. The goal is to continue the ceiling tiles for years to come. Students will work in their Houses to develop ideas and sketches of what to paint on their tiles. Students will learn to create connections among art and other disciplines to strengthen their school pride and culture (art standard VA.68.H.3). The students will do this by researching the meaning of their House and use their knowledge of that culture to create and interpret works of art that reflect that meaning and to innovate their art concepts (art standard VA.68.F.1). As students work in their Houses to paint their ceiling tiles they will be working to create a more positive school culture and climate. As the tiles are then replaced around the school the school culture and pride will be impacted as well (art standard VA.68.O.3).

Benefits to my students

The benefit of this activity will reach the entire campus; all 1000 students and over 100 teachers and staff, not to mention countless other district personnel and community members that enter our campus. Teaching students about various cultures and how to embrace different cultural values is priceless. As students learn more about the meaning of their Houses and start to develop those positive characteristics in themselves, this will only be reinforced by expressing those ideal artistically.

Budget Narrative

All of these materials will be used for the entire school, over 1000 students, to have the opportunity within their homeroom classes to paint ceiling tiles to represent their House culture. The ceiling tiles themselves do not need to be purchased because we will be using those that are already in place.
