*Increase music reading fluency in grades 3-5 & practice reading fluency in grades K-2 using percussion instruments.
*Increase student engagement through the use of non-traditional unpitched percussion instruments that students may otherwise not have access to. Cajons are wooden instruments based on the original use of crates and bureau drawers as musical instruments. They are deeply rooted in the musical history of Peru, Cuba, Spain, and Africa.
*Increase student collaboration and participation through differentiated instruction.

What will be done with my students

*Working in small groups students will determine the similarities and differences between selected poems and song lyrics.
*Students will use percussion instruments to tap out the rhythm of the words to song lyrics and/or poems first saying the words as they tap the syllables and then removing the words so only the rhythm remains.
*Working in groups, students will orchestrate a poem or song lyrics using the wooden percussion instruments and other instruments available in the music classroom. Students will decide on the form of the poem/song, whether or not to include some of the words, and will arrange the poem/song to create a new piece of music. The amount of teacher direction will vary with the needs of the students. Younger students may need more assistance than older students who have had more experience in music.
*Students in 4th & 5th grades will create written compositions reflecting their finished pieces.
*The instruments will also be used as part of the annual "Sea the Beats" drum circle and art experience held at the school each year. This drum circle also uses materials previously received through FUTURES grants.

Benefits to my students

The arts play an important role in helping students deveop the skills that they will need to succed in the workforce. Skill such as commjnication, collaboration, and creativity are considered an important part of the STEM curricula (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) and are an important part of music education. My students will have the opportunity to practice reading to increase fluency and at the same time will be improving their music reading fluency by linking the rhythms to the words. The students will be achieving the Music Next Generation Sunshine State Standards by collaborating with their peers to create a new musical composition following set criteria.

Budget Narrative

Cajons come in a variety of styles now. This represents a mixture of bongo style cajons (2 drums together), bass cajons (bass drum) Tenor Cajons(higher sounding) and 3 travel cajons. The Bass and Tenor cajons are played by sitting on the top and tapping the sides. The drum in the picture is a tenor cajon. The drum is a drumset in one instrument. The El Flaco Cajon has a flap that is placed on a chair that the person sits on and then plays the wooden drum in front of them. The travel cajons are small wooden squares that students can hold and play. This variety of styles make these instruments accessible to all students meeting whatever physical needs they may have.
