Goal

The goal of this request is to obtain the necessary technology that can provide an engaging and meaningful experience in data collection and data analysis. This technology, TI Nspires, can be utilized with numerous lessons across multiple content areas.

What will be done with my students

The Explanation :
The purpose of the lesson detailed in this request is to focus on Science standards, more specifically Science process or Nature of Science.

Students will explore Science Process concepts through lecture, presentation, and class discussion. (These concepts are part of each science curriculum beginning in primary school. Students should have prior knowledge)
• Independent/Dependent variable
• Control/Constant
• Quantitative/Qualitative
• Observation/ Inference
• Replication/ Repetition
• Communication (including visual representation of data)
• Science vs Pseudoscience
Teacher will explain to students that the activity they are about to begin will explore ALL of these concepts.
Teacher will ask the question “What is beauty?” Through a brief discussion with students it should be determined that beauty is opinion or preference. Teacher should then reference a recent study that showed that symmetry was predominantly associated with beauty. (insert study link)
Teacher should then transition into the study of beauty not being a new idea and introduce Euclid and Phi (The Golden ratio). The teacher should then explain that this idea will be the basis of the activity and investigation.

The Activity: (Groups of four then two)
Does Height effect foot size?
Students will use two meter sticks to measure the length of their foot and their height.
• Use CM as unit (explain precise to .1 cm or 1 mm)
• Keep footwear on (explain problems with accuracy doing this)
• Have 3 different people find height of each student (explain finding average and precision)
• Students create a data table and graph with their personal data (discuss difficulty with limited data)
Students use TI Nspires to analyze data
• Teacher creates lists and spreadsheet page in Quick Poll (height column and foot column)
• Students enter their individual data and sends back to teacher
• Teacher collects data renames and sends back to students (aggregated)
• Teacher selects student to be presenter with TI
• Student creates Data and statistics page
• Through discussion, student identify correct axis (independent/ dependent variable)
• Through discussion analyze graph and identify trend (inference versus observation)

Assessment :
• Questions sent via TI Nspire focused on Science process content
• Review of results using TI NSpire presentation

Benefits to my students

Students will benefit from this lesson through an engaging activity that incorporates multiple science process standards. These same standards are shared by multiple content areas at all grade levels including 13% of the Biology EOC necessary for graduation.

Budget Narrative

The total budget of $1000 will be used to purchase TI Nspire graphing calculators
