My primary goal in my kindergarten classroom is to help all of my students to be successful, feel respected and allow them to have a voice. In these last 10 years planning for the success of my kindergarteners has become more challenging. I have read research, attended seminars and have actively sought a solution to meet the needs of my most "At Risk Children". The one most consistent key component in meeting the needs of my most at risk population in my classroom has been to focus on addressing these students' need for movement and focus. I have learned that by stimulating my students' need for inherent need for movement I have satisfied this desire and positively affected this populations' ability to be social interactive, cognitively engaged and emotional satisfied. In my experience, by implementing this goal of stimulating the sensory motor skills of these children their proprioceptive senses are stimulated and they experience emotional, social and academic success in the kindergarten classroom.

Goal

What will be done with my students

By implementing specialized seating to activate students' sensory motor skills in the classroom, students are able to achieve stimulation of their proprioceptive sensors. Research and implementation of this strategy has demonstrated a successful outcome. After successfully obtaining a "Donors' Choose" project last year, I saw first hand how life changing this strategy has affected the success of my most "At Risk & academically challenged students". It is my plan to bring more special seating options to my kindergarten children. One of the most successful sensory seatings I added to my classroom last year was the Balance Ball seating and the Bouncy Bands on the students' chairs. I currently have 5 bouncy bands and 1 balance ball. It is my plan to implement both seating options on a larger scale so more of my students can experience the success of this seating strategy.

Benefits to my students

By implementing these specialized seating strategies stimulation of students' sensory motor skills is accomplished. My students will benefit in the following ways; cognitive focus, engaged body, improved concentration, also healthy posture promoted and restlessness is reduced. Ultimately, by the end of each student's year in my kindergarten class he/she is better equipted to be an active participant in his/her's learning during the next year in the First grade!

Budget Narrative

I have shopped for the best possible purchase rate. Balance balls are expensive but Amazon offers free shipping and also this company is very supportive when returns and exchanges are required. The budget allows for 7 Balance Ball seats and 10 Bouncy Band seating sets. The total cost for all of these alternative seating options is $629.43 If I am able to meet the special needs of this population during their year in kindergarten hopefully they will continue to strive and succeed throughout their 12 years in public education!
