Goal

Our goal is it increase understanding and interest in STEM topics through high interest, hands on projects that accompany standard diploma curriculum in a resource setting. We would also like to have positive parental/mentor involvement through open house student project displays and labs to be held once per semester.

What will be done with my students

We have designed a series of projects, using budget conscious materials, with the intention of improving understanding of curriculum, retaining new found knowledge and creating products and memories that last far beyond the lesson's duration and increase positive parental involvement. So often parents are only contacted when something is wrong, we want to include them in the celebration of their student's educational achievements. The projects we intend to use for instruction are; modeling an edible rendition of earth's layers, making tectonic plate bandannas, creating a water cycle poster and an actual miniature biomes/ecosystem, break their own geodes, writing a children's story about nature based photographs, keeping STEM journals of every project, weather reporting and prognosticating lab, moon phase turning dial, dragsters and bridges exhibiting force and motion properties for the Volusia County Fair competition and Science fair projects. We will photo document work and progress and use the photos and accompanying student created designs to create a classroom memory quilt that we will display in the room. All of these priceless adventures can be bought for 92 children with the money from this grant request. We will keep the room open to host a lunchtime study club daily for kids who need extra time, help or just want to work some more.

Benefits to my students

We hope that we will improve attendance, attention and interest through these high interest projects. We will use pre and post testing to determine if knowledge was gained and retained throughout the curriculum presentation. We hope to improve relations with students and their parents through frequent parent updates and open house, student museums once per semester. The students in resource classes often score low on FSA testing, we hope that the better retention of material and lasting lesson recall will help students attain FSA gains and an overall better understanding of STEM and the world they live in.

Budget Narrative

I shopped around to find the very best and lowest prices for these items and along the way got many materials donated, allowing me to expand and do even more with my potential grant money. Most of the supplies will come from Oriental Trading Company, Pitsco, Teacher's Discovery and Amazon. I have run the lesson of "Earth's Edible Layers" in the past and have found it to be one of the most memorable and valuable lessons of the semester. The students build the layers of Earth from the inside out, and then take a quiz on what layers the ingredients stand, what their actual composition is for and rather they are liquid or solid; as they are consuming their lab. I am aware that this grant process does not regularly pay for edibles, but I would hope you wold see this as lab supplies and grant this one. Many of the materials are consumable and will only last this year, but some of it will be able to be saved or duplicated so we can get many years use out of these supplies. Thank you for this opportunity!
