Goal

My goal is to install the love of reading and sharing with my students and their families. My students are getting excited about reading and I want to continue the momentum.

What will be done with my students

I will be putting together, hopefully 18 reading bag books, that can be checked out by students to take home and complete what is in the bag. Each one will be themed and correlate to our Wonders Curriculum. They get Gilmer Raffle Tickets for showing responsibility by taking care of the bag and by returning the bag. Each bag will have a type of reading material and activities they can do by themselves, or hopefully will get families involved. I had done these years ago at Westside Elem and the kids checked them out all the time.

RI 2.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words or phrases in a text relevant to a grade 4 topic or subject area.
RI 2.5 Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
RI 2.6 Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe the differences in focus and the information provided.

Benefits to my students

I teach all of the 4th Grade Gen Ed students at Chisholm Elementary. We dropped to a "C" this year and the students were upset. I am not a "teaching to the test " teacher but the methods I use produced the highest ELA and Writing scores and the most learning gains last year. I hope to continue that this year and love to use all different types of methods and materials to encourage out of the box thinking and self motivation. I have been in education for over 24 years and I am about building relationships and putting the accountability of the learning on the student to decide how they learn and what they want to explore to learn a specific skill. They will be reading, sharing thoughts, learning cooperatively, building relationships, increasing comprehension and problem solving skills, as well as many other reading skills and life skills.

Budget Narrative

All of the supplies above will allow me to make the bags, reuse materials and make them durable enough to last for a while. I plan to make them and have the parents and students sign an agreement. The students and parents have loved this in the past. Thank you for your consideration.
