The goal for this project is to purchase 3 Osmo Genius kits plus coding kits to develop our new Technology class at Indian River Elementary School. In doing so, I will be able to engage all 615 students in hands on learning activities during their class time and begin an after-school technology club. The Osmo Coding kits is a fantastic way to introduce the students to the basic ideas of coding.

The purchase of the Osmo Coding will introduce my students to a new world of technology that most have never experienced. My students have the desire, the drive, and the intelligence for coding but many have not yet had the opportunity. I am hoping that with the knowledge gained from an introductory coding program such as the Osmo, my students will begin to branch out and explore the new ways technology is changing our lives. I hope these experiences will inspire my students and begin their path to a potential new career.

Goal

The goal for this project is to purchase 3 Osmo Genius kits plus coding kits to develop our new Technology class at Indian River Elementary School. What will be done with my students

All of my students will be using the Osmo kits for engaging standard based learning activities throughout the school year. I am honored to teach all 615 students as a Technology Special Area teacher. Students as young as Pre-K will be able use the Osmo kit for hands on learning experiences. Students will be able to practice Phonemic Awareness, Operations and Algebraic Thinking, and Number & Operations in Base Ten immediately. Mathematical Practices: MP.1, MP.2, MP.4, MP.5, and MP.7 are developed while students are using the Numbers program that is included in the Osmo kit.

Students who participate in the after-school technology club will be working together on coding activities using Code.org, and Osmo Coding activities. The club is to meet weekly from October 2017 - April 2018. With the addition of new kits, I will be able to service 20+ students in this club each year.

Students will learn the basic principles of coding with instant feedback using the Osmo Coding kits.
 

 

Benefits to my students

I have found that most students at our school have had minimal coding experience. Because we are a Title I school, many of our students have very limited access to technology. One of the main benefits of this grant would to provide for the addition of the Osmo Coding kits for our after-school club. This, in turn, will allow more students to have access to coding. I believe the hands-on experience and immediate feedback offered will encourage both girls and boys to participate. The earlier that we get children interested in computer sciences, the more likely they are to continue in computer science courses in high school and college.

The Osmo Coding kits are designed to allow students to follow a pattern of simple directions to direct a character within a game to complete simple tasks. Learning should be relevant and cool if possible. If we want to see more students interested in computer science topics, we need to make it relevant to their lives. The video game character and ability to create music in the Osmo coding program entices students to try something new.

This coding program will also benefit students as they learn perseverance and collaboration when faced with difficulties in coding. Collaboration among students develops higher level thinking skills and social skills. Student collaboration also builds self-esteem and enhances student satisfaction while creating an active learning environment. Perseverance and a growth mindset – the idea that anyone can learn anything with hard work – is one of the most important tools for any student in coding and life.

I am excited to start the Technology class and club at Indian River Elementary school. As we prepare our students for jobs that may not exist currently, I believe technology and coding will be a critical component of most jobs in the future. The Osmo kits allow all students in our school hands on engaging learning with the basic kit. The coding add-on allows students to follow their interests and build basic coding knowledge. As I teacher, I am excited to watch them learn to take turns programming and coding. There will be times of frustration and celebration as we learn from failures and grow from our successes. My belief is that my students will be learning through this engaging program skills that I cannot teach through a book. The students will become problem solvers and innovative thinkers.

I believe this project may inspire many of my students to explore a future that may include coding, science, robotics, and engineering. I am very excited at the prospect of being able to start this program so that together we can inspire even more young scientists and engineers.
 

 

Budget Narrative

I would like to purchase 3 Osmo Genius Kits, 1 Awbie Coding, and 2 Coding Jam kits.
My principal has already purchased 1 Osmo Genius kit, Osmo Awbie Coding kit and 1 Sphero Educational Robot at the cost of $276.98 to start the program. I plan on presenting to our SAC committee and asking them to purchase two more Sphero Educational Robots at the cost of $259.98.
