Goal

Critical thinking involves the evaluation of sources such as data, facts, observable phenomenon, and research findings.

The goal of the Research Station is to provide opportunities for 410 students to construct knowledge and critical thinking skills through an independent student research station in the Media Center. Students will be provided a space to practice researching for pleasure using print and electronic reference materials, microscopes, iPads, Magnifying glasses, specimens and specimen containers…

What will be done with my students

Students will be able to come into the Media Center and bring specimens or use specimens provided to examine and research the world around them. In addition to observing specimen’s students will be offered opportunities to construct new knowledge about the specimens using reference books, iPads, microscopes, and magnifying glasses to gather new information and make conclusions.

The Research station will have guidance on of activities students should partake in while at the station. Including but not limited to the reinforcement of the Scientific Process, humanitarian treatment of specimens, and general rules for use. Research station topic will rotate Bimonthly until more research materials have been collected. Students will be required to document their findings using technology (photo's or video) and through drawings and fact sheets. Activities at research station use will be broken down to grade level appropriateness. Students will be able to advance through activity levels at their own pace. Allowing individual students the opportunity for differentiated learning.

Benefits to my students

Students have a natural curiosity to learn. Materials are not always available to the student during their free time in class or at home to peruse research on a topic that interests them. I believe students should have the opportunity to learn how to research for pleasure. Students should be given the opportunity to use research tools outside of classwork to learn how to research and explore items and topics that interest them.

Budget Narrative

The budget for this grant is for items my school does not have for the Research Station. The Research Station already has the following items available: iPads, Electronic Microscopes, and print reference materials. Materials requested will be usable to all 410 students at school with various levels of teacher guidance and supervision. The research station area has the ability to accommodate up to 4 students working at one time.

In additions to posters and specimens for observation, the Research Station will have an area for students to display the specimens they bring from home and document their research findings. Cases are needed to exhibit these items safely.

Lastly, at this time the Research Station topic’s will be rotated bi-monthly. In order to store specimens, posters... safely, storage containers will be needed.
