Goal

This grant will provide approximately 175 primary students at Spruce Creek Elementary equipment and toys for the primary playground. This will give students opportunities to increase their activity level while at recess while also developing social skills and working together.

What will be done with my students

This past school year, I was part of the VUE leadership team, and I competed an action research project and learned about the importance of recess in the elementary school. This summer, Governor Scott signed into law a massive education bill, which includes the mandate that all K-5 students have a minimum of 20 minutes of recess a day. This grant supports both my research findings and the recess bill.

Currently, 6 Kindergarten, 3 ESE, and 3 PreK classes share the primary playground. The playground includes one large play structure, a balance beam, and 4 swings. This equipment is enough for about 2 classes to use at a time. This grant seeks to purchase additional equipment and supplies so more classes can be outdoors at a time and keep students active. Instead of waiting for a turn at the swings or climber, students can instead choose a different activity.

This grant will be used to purchase playground balls and basketballs as well as a moveable quad basketball hoop. It will also buy a hopscotch mat and soccer balls and net. Jump ropes, ball hops, and a bean bag toss game will also be purchased. Spruce Creek already has an outdoor storage container, so there is a safe place for the equipment to be stored and locked up when not in use.

Benefits to my students

One of the conclusions of my action research is that in order for recess to be most effective, students need adequate equipment and should be taught active playground games. This grant will do both. Once taught how to properly use the equipment and play games (such as hopscotch or bean bag toss), students will also develop their social skills as they play together.

The effectiveness of this grant will be evaluated by teacher observation, looking for increased active participation as well as cooperation while on the playground.
