Goal

My students need equipment, supplies, and storage space to create a Maker Space to bring our Media Center into the 21st century.

What will be done with my students

Students will be allowed to access our MakerSpace whenever they visit the library, including before and after school and with lunch passes. They will use their time and these resources to develop 21st Century skills and work collaboratively on self-directed STEM and art projects, or take a "brain break" with a fun activity and flexible seating.

Benefits to my students

MakerSpaces have numerous benefits to students. Makerspaces help students with:
- Developing creativity skills
- Developing critical thinking and problem solving skills
- Applying knowledge to practical problems
- Collaborating with other students more
- Gaining confidence in their abilities

Makerspace learning can empower students, helping them to shift from being passive consumers of information and products to active creators and innovators. They also give students a way to satisfy the natural desire to do something hands-on and less structured, especially when so much of their day is highly regimented.

Describe the Students

Largo Middle School is a Title 1 (high-poverty) school in Florida. Students here come from diverse backgrounds and represent many cultures and walks of life. Our students are bright, creative, and caring young people who strive for success despite any obstacles they might face outside of school. We have a welcoming school culture where everyone is part of the school family.

Last year our school grade improved from a D to a C thanks to the hard work of our students and staff. We were the only school in Pinellas County to make gains in every category.
