Goal

Students will be able to build financial literacy through the use of books, play money and a variety of other materials in our housekeeping area.

What will be done with my students

As they listen to books about characters purchasing materials in exchange for money they will have opportunities to act that out during inside play in our housekeeping area. With the use of a cash register and play money they will be able to purchase food items such as ice cream sundaes and pizza.

Benefits to my students

Students will increase their knowledge of financial literacy through the use of books read aloud and role playing while in our classroom housekeeping area. They will be strengthening their counting skills as well as learn the value of money. This will highly impact language development, especially for those students who are still learning English.

Describe the Students

I co-teach with a wonderful kindergarten teacher. Between the two of us, we have 40 energetic and inquisitive students. Almost 3/4 of them qualify for free lunch. For 11 of them, English is not their first language. Three of them receive special education services. One third of our class just turned 5 in the summer. Hands on activities are a must for them. Over one half of our class is not meeting expectations for our first grading cycle.

Budget Narrative

Students will need a cash register with play money to complete transactions for food purchases. They will also need a food cart to use as they sell their food along with much desired pizza and ice cream making materials. The listening center will be used so that they can listen to stories related to saving money and using money to purchase goods.
