Research shows that when there's a presence of books in the home children have an enormous advantage in school. Our goal is to help families build a home with books encouraging children to read for pleasure and encourage discussion among family members about what they've read. Creating a crate library nook will help parents help develop and reinforce literacy skills, build vocabulary, imaginative richness, and skills needed to be successful lifelong learners.

Goal

Research shows that when there's a presence of books in the home children have an enormous advantage in school. Our goal is to help families build a home with books encouraging children to read for pleasure and encourage discussion among family members about what they've read. Creating a crate library nook will help parents help develop and reinforce literacy skills, build vocabulary, imaginative richness, and skills needed to be successful lifelong learners.

What will be done with my students

Parents and students will be invited to join us for a "Create your own home library".

We will have a brief presentation with a PowerPoint using school data and research that discusses the importance of having a home library. Provide parents with ideas of where and how to create space to promote reading and life long learners.

Each child will get a crate and with the help of their parents they will paint the crates, receive a clip on lamp, and then get to choose 5 Scholastic books to start their own personal home libraries.

Benefits to my students

Research shows that when there's a presence of books in the home children have an enormous advantage in school. Research also shows that growing up in a home with 500 books would propel a child 3.2 years further in education, on average, than would growing up in a similar home with few or no books.

University of Nevada sociologist M.D.R. Evans. “A child from a family rich in books is 19 percentage points more likely to complete university than a comparable child growing up without a home library.” Without a doubt, having a home library helps children get a little farther in school.

Creating a home culture where books are enjoyed and respected provides skills and competencies that are useful in school.
