Goal

I would like to increase a love of learning through a hands on exploration trip for my entire school. Many of our students don't get the opportunity to go out into nature and explore the world around them. I would like to provide them an opportunity to explore nature.

What will be done with my students

I would like to fund a hands on trip to Brooker Creek where the students will get to pick activities they find interesting to explore. They have everything from fishing for wild fish and recording data, hikes through swamp and marsh areas, collection of samples and cataloging those samples, owl pellet dissection, and many more. Many of our students have never left South Pinellas, let alone gone to a nature preserve, and I would very much like to have a day of exploration and hands on activities that directly ties into what they are learning in the classroom. They will rotate through labs and demonstrations for an entire day of Science fun.

Benefits to my students

The students would be able to see concepts in real time and up close. They could choose from a menu of activities that would directly interest them. They would have an entire day of interacting in nature and exploring Florida's ecosystem and come to appreciate what our state has to offer and hopefully spark more compassion for nature and protecting wildlife and habitat.

Describe the Students

We are at almost 100% free and reduced lunch. We are an alternative setting, drop out prevention school, and we are very small so funding is very limited. Our school is made up of a huge portion of ESOL, ESE, and 504 students who have been held back a grade.

Budget Narrative

Buses will have to be private and cost approximately 800$ - 1200 depending on what day we can go. we have 215 students at $20 each to attend is $4300. Teachers, staff, and students will cover any overages.
