Goal

This grant will provide support for school gardens/landscaping that will enhance hands-on mathematical and science learning opportunities for all Bear Creek students.

What will be done with my students

Students will be given opportunities to create a growing space by planning and designing the landscape area. Students will also consider soil and environmental conditions, as well as which plants are suitable for the selected areas.
These gardens/landscape areas will then be used by students as a vehicle to understand math topics such as problem solving, geometry, data gathering, and measurement. The lessons taught will align with our Math Florida Standards and Standards for Mathematical Practices, as well as science curriculum standards.
Students will recognize the benefits of using native plants and understand how they provide food/shelter for wildlife such as pollinators (bees, birds, butterflies).

Benefits to my students

Gardening affords a way to instruct mathematics with more hands-on experiences and interactions. Gardening promotes a sense of team work, as well as self and school pride.
Students can deepen their connection to nature and have a reason to care about the world around them.

Describe the Students

Bear Creek is a Title 1 school, with all of our students qualifying for free/reduced lunch. 61% of our population are minority students. Our students have diverse academic needs, and are high performing in the area of mathematics.
